The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and PointsBet Canada have reached a settlement resolving a regulatory proceeding arising from the AGCO’s February 2026 Notice of Proposed Order, the regulator said.
Under the terms of the settlement, PointsBet has agreed to a two-day suspension of its Ontario gaming site, the AGCO said. The suspension will mark the first suspension of a sports betting or online casino operator in Ontario’s regulated online gambling market.
Unreported suspicious wagers
The settlement closes a case over suspicious Jontay Porter bets the operator failed to report, according to the AGCO. The AGCO originally called for a five-day suspension in February, which was reduced to two days in the settlement agreed Tuesday.
The AGCO asked Ontario operators in early 2024 to confirm whether they had offered bets on Porter and whether they had detected any suspicious betting activity. PointsBet responded late and told the AGCO it did not offer any wagers on Porter, the regulator said.
After a U.S. Department of Justice indictment in 2025 revealed Porter’s case was part of a broader insider betting scheme, PointsBet acknowledged 18 months after its first response that it did offer betting markets on Porter, according to the AGCO.
The AGCO then reviewed PointsBet’s wagering data, confirmed signs of the suspicious betting central to the scheme and said the wagers should have been detected and reported at the time.
Independent audit required
PointsBet has agreed as part of the resolution that it will undertake an independent audit using an auditor and audit methodology approved by the AGCO and commits to addressing any findings, the regulator said. The remediation will be independently validated.
The NBA banned Porter for life in 2024 and he is awaiting sentencing for manipulating his performance in games. PointsBet sold its U.S. operations to Fanatics in 2024, but continued its Australian and Canadian operations.
